Many Nigerians who orders goods from other countries are sometimes confused when filling delivery forms when they arrive the space for 'Zip code'. Some might know what a zip code is and it's full importance in the transaction but can't still figure out what on earth Nigeria's zip code is. Luckily this article is there to clear such doubt!

What is a zip code?

Zone Improvement Plan codes is a system of postal codes used by the US Postal Service(USPS). Zip codes as afore-mentioned are used for mailingg and delivery.

They are written in the format – XXXXX-YYYY like for instance, 25436-7543. The one who introduced Zip codes is Robert Moon – a postal worker. It was him who proposed to the US the new index system back in 1944.

One can easily see that Zip codes apply only to the US while other countries use postal codes but fortunately the USPS has codes for overseas countries which are used during delivery processes.  

Nigeria’s own zip code is 00176-0000.


Zip code is needed when filling out online forms. However many people probably from ignorance do it wrong. They fill the international dialing code - 234 as Nigeria Zip Code. It is incorrect!

Instead use these codes:

◆ 110001;
◆ 23401;
◆ 00176.
If not all, one of these codes should work.
