The NYSC is a compulsory programme for all graduate under the age of 30 or just 30 upon graduation. They are sent by the federal communities to touch lives outside their usual environment. They are sent to attach themselves in their community they are posted to and paid allowances for this service to their Nation. It is mainly meant for National integration.

Serving the federal govenment isn't a mere obligation and that is why prospective corps member are trained in the different orientation camp within the country to be fit and healthy.

These fitness training tutored by soldiers lasts about 30 days and has recorded several deaths. Deaths of corper in orientation camps was on the increase. Many believed Corpers died as a result of the hard trainings in camp issued by the Soldiers. Many parents would say their child was okay before he left for orientation camp.

That is the major reason that led to the idea of the mandated medical certificate. They just need it as a prove that these PCMs are fit for orientation camp.  Medical certificate should not be confused with medical report. Medical Report is a record or statement about your health condition. The illness you have will be stated on this report. But Medical Certificate of fitness is a record generated as a result of series of test carried out on a patient.

Medical Certificate of Fitness requirements

Every prospective corps member is to undergo from either General hospital or Military clinic in Nigeria these tests:
1. HIV
2. Genotype
3. Blood group
4. HBsaG
5. PCV
6. HCV
7. Urinalysis
8. ECG
9. Chest X-ray

It is expected that the registration number and phone number of the doctor in charge of/or that conducted the test be included in the medical certificate of fitness for proper verification.

How to obtain Medical Certificate of Fitness:

Getting a medical certificate isn't tedious(or meant to be so). Follow the procedures below to get authentic Medical Fitness Certificate for Nysc service.

₹ Walk into a nearby General or military hospital, Pay and open a folder(that's if it’s your first time). If you had been there before, give them your card to search for your folder.

₹ Next go to the lab unit to submit the specimen for the test (they will give you something to urinate in and would also collect your blood sample).

₹ Meet the Doctor incharge for other tests.

₹ Wait for collection of your medical result.

Note that only Government and Military hospitals are recongnized. Government hospitals are hospitals owned by the federal or any of the state governments and any of its agencies. These include hospitals owned by the Military, Police, Customs, Federal Medical Centres, Teaching Hospitals, General Hospitals, Government Specialist Hospitals, etc.

If you don't know any general hospital around, then it's better to make enquiries probably for anyone around your state of origin. Using a private hospital or a family hospital is totally unacceptable, that would give you more stress than you really would have asked for. Your admission into the orientation camp may be on the stakes, probably.

It is also good to know that only doctors employed by Government or Military Hospital can sign the Certificate for you. Don't be tempted to try to carry out the tests in a Government laboratory and get a private hospital to issue you the certificate.

While compromising with the certificate, you might be doing same to your life - as you know NYSC is by part a section of the military! ;-D The medical certificate is mandated to protect your life so trying to fake it is self defeating.
