Mass communication is one of the popular discipine of study in Nigeria. It is among the so-called 'career courses' and is usually patronised by students and their parents alike.


The course covers a wide spectrum of careers, from advertising and broadcasting to public relations and publishing. However there are certain requirements one must have handy before even applying to study the course.



There are O-level and JAMB requirements for it, even A- level requirements for direct entry aspirants.

Since JAMB isn't the only route through which one can be offered admission to a tertiary institution in Nigeria, there are diverse ways for the different routes. One of the route is IJBM, JUBEB or Predegree if you are not comfortable with JAMB.







O-Level (Waec, Neco, Gce) Requirements for Mass Comm.





Waec has always made it compulsory for a trade subject to be added to the other required eight subject to make it nine. The combination for mass comm isn't left behind.

In some schools there are subject combination for sciences and arts which might be quite right.


Make sure your combination contains:

1. English Language;
2. Literature in English;
3. Mathematics
4. Any trade subject



Add the remaining subjects to make it nine but don't forget what your school councillor tells you to combine is paramount!

These combinations also apply to NECO and GCE.



JAMB Mass comm. combination




The Jamb subject combination for mass communication is just English which is compulsory for everybody and any other three arts subjects.


Be sure to choose courses you are good at. This would better your chances of getting a high Jamb score which then betters admission chances.

CRUTECH requires ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English, Government and any other Social Science or Arts subjects while ESUTECH requires ‘O’ level credit pass in Economics and accepts History or Government.


Differing still is RSUST which requires credits in Mathematics, Economics and any other three  subjects.

There are sure multitude of institutions that has accreditated Mass Communication as one of it's courses but however, they do look for the best students that applied, so be sure to get a goodlooking O-level and Jamb grade.



Direct Entry requirement to study Mass Communication





The direct entry requirements might well depend on each school. Some might need more passes and grade but on average a two ‘A’ level passes in relevant courses is required.



You might have to check independently for what each school requires.  Education of today requires no choice, it's either you get educated or be relegated.


Education, both formal and informal is core to a country's development. Key among it is formal Education much because of it's straight forwardness. There are variety of courses one can chose from if you are uncertain of what to choose. There's a great list of pure  arts courses studied in Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges. Art courses no doubt are among the best courses now in Nigeria.

Those are the basic requirements for mass comm. however different institutions might make minor adjustments.
