In their latest foray into the direct to home broadcast across the country, the Nigerian Communication Satellite Ltd (NIGCOMSAT) some days ago announced a new Satellite TV which it named NextTv.

This is not the first time the satellite company has officially launched a DTH television. During the upsurge of TSTV in 2017, one was launched, however hinderances shortlived the Tv to only the launch buzz.

However, this latest one promises to live beyond the past as the federal government has encouraged all Nigerians to support the new platform. This was clearly stated by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who was represented by the Minister of Communications, Barr. Adebayo Shittu at the satellite tv's unvieling.

He said the federal government is interested in the partnership between NIGCOMSAT and Next and is ready to offer all the needed support to make the partnership work.

Mr Malik Ado- Ibrahim, the chairman of the new company in his view aired that with low entry cost and services to be offered through mobile telephones, rural penetration was a major niche for the company.

The platform isn't a sole one in it's pursuit but a joint venture partnership between Nigus International, a Nigerian technology solutions company, NIGCOMSAT and China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC).

CGWIC comes into scene after haven partnered NIGCOMSAT on several projects since the launch of NIGCOMSAT-1R in December 2011. NIGCOMSAT-1R is a replacement to NIGCOMSAT-1, Nigeria's foremost satellite in orbit.

Nigus purpose in this partnership is to serve as lead partner in NextTV. Funding and other key components like management and administration would be performed by them.

Income generating component of the new company like licensing, marketing, advert placement and content sourcing is done by the lead firm aswell.

NigComSat's duty in the venture is to provide transponders to NextTV getting 15% stake in the company in return for this task. A minimum of 4 transponders is to be made available by the indegenous company.

The chinese firm, GWIC on it's part would provides the uplink equipment for Next Tv. To be assured of it's 10% equity stake in NextTv, this company would also provide back-up satellites to provide redundancies to platform.

The channels to be included in Next tv include 'MTV Base, Trace Africa, CCTV News, MBC, etc as some sources has stated. Official statement by the platform has it that 140+ channels would be aired excluding the ones NigComSat would in the future coporate with local and international content providers.

Free to air channels would probably be a main feature of the tv platform. The definite channels to be offered by this paytv isn't confirmed yet. When such finally take place, same would be updated here.

Next tv subscription costs

Authorities handling the operation of the platform have been cagey about the price of subscriptions. It would have seem like blowing off the main thing before it comes into fruition, though.

However going by the mission of the new DTH tv to provide low cost broadcast, it would be affordable with some free-to-air channels added on as an icing on the cake.
