Nursing, Midwifery and university nursing — what are the difference
To become a nurse in Nigeria, you either obtain a certification(diploma) from school of nursing or get a nursing degree from universities which do offer them. Both have their separate distinctive settings and requirements in obtaining an admission.
Schools of nursing are usually operated by federal or state owned universities, and they do draw out their separate admission methods of accessing their education. Normally, a candidate would be required to obtain the school's admission form, go for an entrance examination, sit for an interview and then undergo a medical tests before being enrolled into the school.
School of nursing, SON offers diploma certificates which conveys on the successful candidate a Registered Nurse (RN) title after a three year study climaxed by a final external examination which is called the hospital final. Getting a nursing certification doesn't mean you're a certified midwife though. To obtain a consequent certification in midwifery, you will need to apply for such at the same school you got your nursing certification or probably another. The study which get you a registered midwifery (RM) certification would cost an additional one and a half year duration.
Like studying engineering in a polytechnic and putting up a comparison with doing so in a university, obtaining a nursing degree from the university is so different from
a similar one gotten from a school of nursing. Here, you would need to either start afresh by applying for the UTME exams so as to get an application through to the institution which you need to get your nursing degree. The duration of study is usually five years.
Alternatively, you could initiate a direct entry to any of those institutions after obtaining a nursing certification from the school of nursing. With a direct entry, ready yourself for a three or four years more study demanded there is no halt in studies. But never mind, the bachelor degree is more esteemed than the diploma. Additionally, for a nursing degree, you would be required to obtain a five credits level passes in WASC/SSCE or its equivalent at not more than two sittings. Subject must include English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics.
