Against popular misconception which suggest otherwise, anyone wishing to study and obtain a degree remotely in Nigeria could easily do so. This is possible because there are some numbers of Nigerian universities which allows for distant learning in order to accommodate students who prefers such.

These Institutions are accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission, NUC, for distant learning programs, and in some cases you would have to pay less fee than those undergoing the conventional physical learning. To get a good ride with distant learning, get your internet enabled computer, and mobile phones in good condition for a seamless schooling.

Although studying through the online materials given isn't monitored, tests and exams given you are mostly proctored. In some of these Institutions, while the first and second-year examinations are computer-based, subsequent examinations are pen on paper. Are you one of those individuals unable to get physical learning due to circumstances beyond your control,  below is the list of accredited online universities yet present in the country.

National Open University

The National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, is the country's largest distant learning university with about 57,000 undergraduates undergoing 50 programmes offered there. It's acceptability comes from it's coordination and distinctness from the regular traditional universities.

It should be noted that the National Open University isn't affected by strikes, which greatly hamper the smooth running of the country's education system. The Institution has it that unlike traditional universities which makes use of permanent staffs for most of its running, the National Open University employs the use of resource persons to it's students, and these resource persons aren't staffs, and they therefore aren't involved in industrial actions.

Graduates of the National Open University like all accredited traditional universities could be mobilized for the compulsory one-year National Youth Service. This is possible after President Muhammadu Buhari on the 3rd of December 2018 amended the National Open University Act. Those who study law in the university could as well further their career at a law school, just like any law graduate in the traditional universities.

Examinations for law students are however pen on paper rather than computer-based, and this takes place in one of their numerous study centers located across the country. Other undergraduates offering some other courses undergo their CBT exams in their first and second years. The 30% Tutor marked assessment adds up with the 70% examination maximum to output a total score for a course in the University.

University of Lagos

Through its Distant Learning Institute (DLI) program, the University of Lagos, UNILAG operates an education system where students aren't required to be physically present in classrooms. However, rather than being through a four-year duration obtainable for regular students, a DLI undergraduate would be subjected to a five-year study period.

Unlike a similar distant learning platform offered by NOUN, UNILAG's DLI requires that you pass its entrance examination before being inducted to it. Also required is that a prospective candidate attains a minimum age of 21 in addition to other requisites: you must have a working internet connection at home; you must obtain all learning materials before tests and exams; you must physically attend two compulsory lectures a month — these are held only on Saturdays.

Courses available under the Institute include:

  • » B.Sc. Accounting
    » B.Sc. Business Administration
    » B.Sc. Economics
    » B.Sc. Public Administration
    » B.Sc. (Ed.) Biology
    » B.Sc. (Ed.) Business Studies
    » B.Sc. (Ed.) Chemistry
» B.Sc. (Ed.) Early Childhood Education
    » B.A.  (Ed.) English
    » B.Sc. (Ed.) Mathematics
    » B.Sc. (Ed.) Physics

Although tuition varies with the program of study, the average expected tuition per year for UNILAG'S distant learning program is N140,000. The University of Lagos is a reputable institution, and many wouldn't entertain doubts about the effectiveness of its open and distant learning program.

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife remains one of the prestigious universities in the country. The Institution boasts of about 60 departments spread across its thirteen departments in addition to a distant learning program.
