Being the only federal university in the state, competition to secure an admission into it is huge. Thereafter, successful applicants to the school are spread across its about thirteen faculties and numerous departments.

And while the Annex Campus serves as learning ground for students of the faculties of Business Administration, Law, Environmental Studies and General Studies, the Town Campus accommodates those from the Faculties of Arts, Education, Social Sciences, Pharmacy. Similarly, the Ime Umana Campus, Ediene Abak situates facilities for Pre-Degree, JUPEB and other special courses.

The institution was ranked the 16th best university in Nigeria for the year 2020 by the Nigerian University Commission, NUC. In a similar rankings by Tft Times and Unirank, the university is ranked 24th and 29th respectively. Aside the positive rankings, the institution is one of repute and one of the readily recommended universities in the country.
For admission into the university of Uyo, candidates must have attained at least five credit in their O-level results. Additionally they are required to obtain at least a UTME cutoff point of 180 and attain a minimum age of 16 at the time of application.
For direct entry candidates, aside presenting their O-level results with five credits, they are required to tender any of these transcripts: OND, ND, NCE, IJMB, Cambridge A level, BSc, HND, ICAN.
