FG: National grid drops from 3,703MW to 9MW
Posted on: June 14, 2022, 05:57:02 AM
According to data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator, a subsidiary of the Federal Government's power transmission firm, Sunday's peak of 3,703 megawatts was reduced to as low as 9 megawatts.

After the national grid went down at about 6.49 pm on Sunday, experts from Nigeria's Transmission Company of Nigeria worked to restore power.

Many power distribution firms had to shut down their numerous outgoing electrical feeds after Sunday's system breakdown, which was the sixth in 2022.

The top generation of 3,703MW was recorded around 5 am on Sunday, according to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Organization (NESO) on Monday in Abuja.

According to the NESO, this fell to 9MW around 7 pm on Sunday, causing the national grid to fail.

It was revealed that the grid had collapsed on Sunday night by some Discos, including Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc and others such as Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company.

Despite the lack of an official announcement from TCN about the system's collapse, it has been reported that electricity generation surged to 2,744.6MW at 6 am on Monday, indicating that the grid's restoration had progressed.

Nigeria's electrical grid went down twice in March and April of this year. Gas shortages, water management issues, and pipeline vandalism contributed to the system's fluctuating power generation.

Experts and consumer organizations in the power industry have warned politicians to refrain from creating political megawatts as they attract voters ahead of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria following the unpredictability of the country's power supply.

It's time to put down the megawatts. Kunle Olubiyo, president of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network and an industry expert, said, "Stop generating electricity on the pages of newspapers and social media."

"I would expand electricity generation from 5,000MW to 30,000MW," he said. How are you going to do this? Please let us know if you have any concerns. Only an average of 3,600MW of the 7,500MW generated by the system now reaches the end-users in Nigeria.

In addition, we have an installed generation capacity of 14,500MW that might be used to increase our national energy capacity." Regarding grid power, the 11 distribution firms and TCN often reject it.

Because of natural gas shortages, market shortfalls, and regulatory uncertainty, the nation has been "permanently structured into a vicious loop of distribution of darkness," "perpetual energy crises," and grid infrastructure limits, among other things.

Olubiyi inquired why Nigeria's power supply situation had deteriorated so dramatically after December 2021.

Condemned the front-runners in Nigeria's presidential race for not addressing core concerns "and telling Nigerians how they will solve the root causes of energy crisis."

That's not how the electrical industry gets away with it. We need to know in detail how they propose to deal with the electricity sector's problems."

According to the spokesperson for the Electricity Consumers Association of Nigeria, Chijioke James, electricity users are not satisfied with the poor power supply in Nigeria.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am. A constant and stable power source is what consumers are looking for. According to him, "consumers aren't happy with the amount of power they're getting around the country."
