Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate, stated on Sunday in Abuja that the nation can no longer be saved by prayer alone. This was in line with his statement that Nigerians must act immediately to guarantee transparent leadership.
The Revival House of Glory, Abuja, hosted the Men of Valour Conference, where Obi was a panelist on "Navigating the Corridors of Power: The Church and Politics."
Questions from the crowd led Obi to say that the religious responsibilities performed by Nigerians had been fulfilled. They should vote for their preferred candidate now.
"We've prayed enough; now it's time to take action. Do we want them in charge? You may pray as much as you want; they won't go until you do.
This means that we must take action, not only pray. Our time has come to shut down the church and deal with these individuals," he said. Moreover, Obi revealed the existence of continuing talks between the Labour Party and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).
"All I can say is that what he stated is accurate," Obi remarked when asked about the possible running mate between him and the NNPP candidate. There is nothing more I can say."
The former governor of Anambra State also referred to 70% of Nigerian politicians as lunatics. A madman in government, according to him, would steal N80billion from the public coffers for personal use. According to him, if "these lunatics" don't make way for competent people, the nation will continue to be in trouble.
It is time for Nigerians to reclaim their nation from the hands of gangsters. 70% of today's politicians should not be there in the first place. I've said it before, and I'll repeat it: Nigerian politics is a case of asylum inmates taking over.
Only in this nation is the worst person in the world at the helm of affairs. To begin, I worked in the financial sector as a trader. You get ill if you consume more than you should.
"How do you explain that one person took N80 billion. It's an illness, not greed. Taking N1 billion is greed; taking N80 billion is a disease. People with deranged minds have gained control of our political system "Things will change if we have young people who are competent and capable of being there," he remarked.
According to the LP presidential candidate, Nigerians will determine if a third party can unseat the All Progressive Congress and People's Democratic Party.
Obi said, "It is about the people. To run for governor of Anambra, I formed a minor political party. Others informed me that I lacked organization. There is no structure without people. There were no state or federal legislators from the Anambra Party while I was governor of the state.
"Anambra was the only state I left as fiscally solid governor. Nobody owed us anything. To be king or queen, you must be elected by your peers. Let folks come and share their beginnings; we have eight months to work with. Do not utilize people or fancy paper; instead, speak directly to us so that we may hold you accountable."
In 2022, Obi, a previous People's Democratic Party presidential candidate, defected and dropped out of the campaign only days before the primary poll that saw Atiku Abubakar emerge as the party's flagbearer. Shortly afterward, on May 30, Professor Pat Utomi stepped aside to deliver him the Labour Party's presidential nomination.
