Agents are required to report sales of N150,000 on "sport" merchandise to get an N30,000 incentive, a requirement that some of them say was not in place before the implementation of the new policy in January 2023.
Bet9ja, a Nigerian betting firm, has been criticized by several of its agents over a reportedly revised bonus target policy. Some agents have complained that the new policy, which goes into effect in January 2023, changes the bonus structure by requiring them to report sales of N150,000 on "sport" merchandise to get an N30,000 bonus.
They complained that keeping the business afloat was difficult because of rising costs and requested that the betting firm reconsider its commission structure.
"We are working without good commission, the same commission when fuel was sold for N165, and it's still the same commission now that fuel is sold for N250 per litre. The running of the business is difficult due to inflation of things, but instead of the management reviewing the commission payment scheme, they put up a fictitious bonus task for us," one of them said.
"Imagine in my business making sales of N1.2 million on virtual and making sales of N100 on sport, and I didn't earn a bonus since the sport aim has been tied to the requirement to obtain the bonus.
Competition in the sports betting industry makes obtaining the bonus difficult; as a result, many customers no longer visit brick-and-mortar establishments to place wagers, preferring instead to place wagers over the Internet; this has a negative impact on us as agents, the primary impediment to accomplishing the goal.
Agent Segun said, "They claimed certain super agents are performing numerous betting throughout their businesses, and some agents questioned them who appointed such super agents."
They appointed them, and we agents work for them, but it isn't perfect because the super agents get most of the rewards, and the same super agents engage in various bets.
How can a person in my position confront the realities of my company situation and run it effectively when I know I have no other resources to do so? We generate revenue through online transactions, and successful sales are particularly challenging today.
We strongly recommend that they change the target policy that denies bonus pay to responsible agents like myself and makes it appear that my efforts go unrewarded.
