Pandemonium broke out at Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, in Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of the state as hundreds of students of the school embarked on protest which forced the rector, Dr. Funke Akinkuolere, into hiding.

The students embarked on the protest because of  alleged attempt by the rector to stop them from conducting students’ union government election.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard that the angry students blocked the main entrance of the institute as early as 7a.m. last Thursday.

It was gathered that the protest began Wednesday and continued Thursday, when the students had set to hold their election, but were barred by the rector from going ahead.

A source within the institute hinted Vanguard that the election was supposed to have been held last December, but was postponed by the rector who assumed office June last year.

The protest did not, however, record any casualty as both the rector and other members of the staff of the institute stayed in their apartments, while the protest lasted.

The state government has  directed that the school be shut indefinitely and ordered the students to leave the campus.

The directive by the government was made known through a state television broadcast.

Several attempts to get the reaction from the rector was unsuccessful as she neither picked calls put through to her mobile phone nor responded to the message sent to her.

Following the students’ protest, residents of the area stayed indoors while traders hurriedly closed shops.

Chairman, Students Union Electoral Committee, Tunde Okunlola, said the rector claimed she had been ordered by the government to stop the election.
