Education / 2019 ASUU Strike Latest Updates
« on: November 06, 2018, 09:18:33 PM »
The academic staff union of universities, ASUU declared an indefinite strike embarked upon by the union Sunday night, after its National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held in Akure, Ondo State.

The National President of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, while announcing the commencement of the strike, said the action is because of the insincerity of government in meeting their demands.

However, the minister of Education, Adamu Adamu has  regretted the action of ASUU. He said:

“I must say that this is difficult to reconcile with all the efforts and positive achievements we have been able to make.

“Let me begin by saying that the issues necessitating this strike dates back to 2009 when the then government of late President Umaru Musa Yar Adua signed an agreement with the ASUU on funding of federal universities in the country.

“The agreement provided for funding of universities to the tune of N1.3trillion over a period of six years. It is instructive to know that Nigeria was experiencing the oil boom at that time. It was, therefore, expected that government will be able to meet the terms of agreement. “However, international oil prices crashed in subsequent years, thereby throwing the country into economic hardship, at the inception of this administration, the country’s economic fortunes worsened, nose diving into recession, with dire consequences on all sectors of the economy, including education.

“We exited recession not too long ago, and we are just beginning to recover from the consequences of low oil prices, which are happily beginning to pick up.

The current ASUU strike is based on delays in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, all parties allegedly agreed to in the year 2017, including compelling government to conclude the renegotiation of other agreements also collectively reached in 2009.

Follow the updates below to know how it would eventually play out.

The afrobeat singer is set to hold a listening party for his yet to be released sophomore studio album titled “Life Is Easy Volume 2, Lagos to London” November 8.

While inspecting the Legacy House headquarters of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja today(6/11/18), Director General of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Campaign Council and Senate President Bukola Saraki has assured that, given the nationwide support of Nigerians, the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar would definitely be victorious in the February 2019 Presidential election.

National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus led Saraki round various offices at the Legacy House.

Secondus urged Nigerians to mobilize enmass for the election, and tasked them to vote out the APC come 2019.

Saraki noted that “since the emergence of Atiku as PDP Presidential candidate, there has been renewed hope among Nigerians towards actualizing their collective quest to rescue our nation from the misrule of the incompetent, divisive and deceptive President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.”

“Atiku’s candidacy has reunited Nigerians across board and reawakened our collective consciousness towards the restoration of purposeful leadership and national productivity, irrespective of ethnicity, religion and political affiliations.”

Senator Godswill Akpabio, who had defected from the Peoples democratic party,PDP to the APC has said though he is not God, he has the assurances that President Muhammadu Buhari will return to power.

While in the PDP until defection, Akpabio was the senate Minority leader.

He made the declaration in an interview with journalists. He said God had designed Buhari to help the country at this point and that he decided to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to help the president stabilize the country.

“I am not God and I am not also a prophet but sometimes God reveals things to people that he loves and I know God loves me because I love God.

“The projection is that in terms of the political rigmarole that is going on in terms of alignment and realignments, 2019 victory will belong to the All Progressive Congress (APC) and most especially President Muhammadu Buhari will be returning for a second term in office.

“I am saying so because God loves Nigeria. This is a man we have tried for so many years to be president of the country.

“One time he gave himself that he was no longer going, he thanked all the supporters but from nowhere, a group of people, some from PDP and APC came together and went back to appeal to him to come and they even opted to buy the form for him to come.

“In spite of his resistance, he came and then of course confusion entered into the PDP family and God is a master designer, he eventually emerged president,” he said when he was asked what he thinks about the 2019 election.

He explained that when Buhari emerged president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan did not wait for the final result of the election before calling to congratulate him.

“I believe that in 2015 we all had our choices but God had his way and when God has a hand in something, I don’t think God is a master of uncompleted projects.

“This was not a decision of man, this was a decision of God and therefore God can give him the second term through Nigerians and you can see why I will be bold enough to say so that you can see the kind of political personalities that he continues to attract despite the rigmarole of some members of his political party.

“That is why I can project that come 2019 general elections the APC will become victorious,” he added.

Music / Top 10 Music Record Labels In Nigeria 2019
« on: November 03, 2018, 06:19:47 PM »
Music in Nigeria generates certain amount of influence as in any known country. Digging deep into the industry, you can easily see that certain things add up for a popular song to emerge. One of such is the record label the song emanates from.

The record label can be described as the house structure of the musician and his/her musics. In place of the musician, the label to some extent represent the music and even the musicians. The money derived from the tunes in a recording house is shared as stipulated by the management of the music label.

A tune from a well known record label gains certain advantages. The tune would be hugely anticipated in the face place. It would be highly aired and loved. This would also expose the musician giving him/her the desired influence sought for.

This article focuses on the current standing best record labels in the country, who is the brain behind them and the members which make up these record labels. The isn't that static as one might see elsewhere, it is highly dynamic in terms of consistency. One might be a popular music lord because of a nice hit today buy in the long run might fail to live up to it.

The singers themselves aren't consistent to a record label. They prefer creating their own new record label making it difficult to track the to a record label.

A conglomeration of African countries for free trade across borders which is named African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) might have been one the continent's strides towards gains through unity had it been that all African countries agreed to it.

The agreement as said would increase trades by large margins of up to 52%.

Aside the World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreement, this is the biggest trade agreement to be signed.

This trade agreement would be a major influence to the about 1.2 billion population of the continent with a combined Gross Domestic Product of more than $2 trillion in terms of a single continental market for goods and services when implemented in full force.

The scope of the treaty are: agreements on trade in goods, services, investmen, rules and procedures on dispute settlement, including a range of provisions to facilitate trade, reduce transaction costs, provide exceptions, flexibilities and safeguards for vulnerable groups and countries in challenging circumstances.

The agreement has it that countries would remove tariffs of about 90 percent of goods traded on it's borders, while the remaining 10 percent tagged "sensitive items" would be decided on later in another phase of the treaty.

The African first major trade agreement isn't set to merely help African nations trade among it'self alone but also liberalise services associated with trade. There is what they call "non-tariff barriers" which hamper trade between African countries like unnecessary delays at the border.

There is also a greenlight that as the agreement strenghtens further,an unrestricted movement of African Nationals within their continent can be achieved. One other feature that may also cap the African free trade treaty is a single currency in African trade.

AfCFTA - How it started

The AfCFTA treaty was started by African Heads of State and Governments who were uptimistic in creating a single continental market for goods and services in member nations of the African Union, with free movement of business persons and investments using a single currency.

The idea was left idle until june 2015 when consultations and negotiations for establishing the treaty commenced during the 26th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly Heads of State and Government in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Two years forward(2017) was the approved year inwhich the treaty would become operational, however this wasn't achieved as many member nations requested for more time to continue consultations on the potential impacts on their economies.

The treaty despite all those topsy was finally signed on March 21, 2018 during the 18th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Governments in Kigali, Rwanda.

The main purpose behind the agreement is inter-African trade. It is analysed that the trade between African countries is relatively limited and less - about only 10.2 percent of the continent's total trade in 2010.

A coordinator of the African Trade Policy Centre at UNECA, David Luke said: "Colonialism created a situation where neighbours stopped trading with each other. The main trading route was between African countries and European countries and between African countries and the US".

Nigeria's position in the agreement

Nigeria which is the largest economy in Africa with GDP of $405 billion is delaying its signature to the agreement, according to the government to widen and deepen domestic consultations, to ensure all concerns were addressed, as it would not sign any agreement that would not fairly and equitably represent the interest of Nigeria.

There is a chalenge that Africa's less advanced countries would be at a loss. The more advanced countries with more strongly developed manufacturing capabilities would get ease of selling goods unhindered which would eventually affect industrial development at the less developed country.

After President Muhammadu Buhari was fired at by the opposition People's democratic party, PDP on oct. 26 to show proof of his WAEC certificate 'if he has any', the president has today received an attestation certificate of it.

He received it on Friday from the West African Examination Council, WAEC.

the president has consistently been known to submit his credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission without his WASCE results. When submitting his credentials to INEC this year, he only submitted an affidavit where he claimed that his credential was with the Secretary of the Military Board.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina announced that President Muhammadu Buhari had received the attestation certificate and confirmation of school certificate result from the West African Examination Council, WAEC.
